What is a Crisis-Ready Interventionist?
A Crisis-Ready Interventionists® (CRI) adds practical, human capability within an organization’s existing Psychological Health and Safety (PHS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program. CRIs do not replace leaders, HR, EFAP, or clinical support. They strengthen prevention, early intervention, and response by helping people recognize risk, respond supportively, and connect colleagues to the right help when it matters most.
Three Ways a Crisis-Ready Interventionists® Strengthens a Workplace
A Crisis-Ready Interventionists® is a trained employee who recognizes early warning signs, supports colleagues in distress, and connects people to appropriate help before situations escalate.
A CRI is not a therapist, investigator, or case manager. They are a visible, trusted resource within the workplace who helps people feel seen, supported, and connected to the right next step in moments that matter most.
Recognize Early Signs of Crisis (Prevention)
CRIs are trained to recognize the early signs someone may be struggling, including changes in behaviour, mood, communication, or performance. They create space for safe, informal conversations to surface concerns related to workload pressure, conflict, exclusion, burnout, or other psychosocial stressors.
By noticing strain early and encouraging employees to speak up, CRIs help organizations identify emerging risks sooner and strengthen shared awareness across the workplace.
Outcome: Timely awareness of psychosocial risks helps leaders and support systems respond earlier.
Early Intervention (De-escalation)
CRIs help reduce escalation by responding early when someone appears distressed, overwhelmed, or at risk.
They engage colleagues in supportive, non-judgmental conversations, use practical de-escalation and defusing skills, and help create calm in difficult moments. Where appropriate, CRIs connect employees to internal or external support such as leadership, HR, EFAP, or other available resources.
Outcome: Early supportive action helps create calmer, safer pathways to care before situations become more serious.
Respond in the Moment (Stabilization & Support)
The CRI provides immediate, practical support when an employee experiences a crisis or high-risk moment, aiming to reduce harm and support safe decision-making.
This may include responding to emotional distress, conflict escalation, or potential harm to self or others. A CRI can help stabilize the situation, and connect individuals to appropriate internal or external supports, including escalation when additional help is needed.
Outcome: High-risk moments are met with practical, compassionate support that reduces harm and helps employees access appropriate care and escalation pathways.
Across all three areas, a Crisis-Ready Interventionist helps an organization:
Recognize concerns earlier
Intervene before situations escalate
Respond with confidence and connect to support
Certified Crisis-Ready Interventionists® strengthen Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace by adding practical, human capability inside the workplace, so people are better prepared to support one another when it matters most
